Maurice Sapiro
A native of New Brunswick, NJ, Maurice Sapiro built his first darkroom at the age of thirteen. Though today
he is celebrated primarily for his oil painting, photography has always been central to Sapiro’s lifelong love of
“picture-making.” The pictures shown here represent three different photographic processes. The European
scenes, all done in 1956, were snapped with a Leica 3F, enlarged on silver gelatin paper, and tinted by hand.
The colored landscapes are cibacromes, meaning they were developed from color transparencies as opposed to
traditional negatives. Lastly, the 8 x 10 black-and-white contact prints were taken with a 1911 Eastman
View No. 2 camera that the artist purchased on eBay and refurbished himself.
