Born in 1949 in Chula Vista, California, Walter Rane studied fine art at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. The curriculum at the Art Center was grounded in drawing and classical anatomy, a combination that prepared Rane well for a successful career as a commercial illustrator. From 1974 to 1995 his clients included the Rockefeller Group, the Grummond Corporation, Reader’s Digest, Eddie Bauer, Time Life, Random House, National Geographic, and more. Rane eventually moved away from illustration toward paintings of sacred subjects drawn mostly from the Book of Mormon. He has held solo shows at Sailor’s Valentine Gallery in Nantucket, the May County Art League, Stable Fine Arts Gallery, and the Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City.

While exploring religious themes in his larger works, Rane has found time to create smaller works of extraordinary feeling. Whether painting winter in Central Park or the beach in summer, his pictures carry a casual and accessible allure. Detailed and wistful, they demonstrate his origins as an illustrator, while showcasing new talent of the first rank.
