Barbara Maiser: Contemporary Watercolorist

Barbara Maiser’s distinctive style blends both control and spontaneity, illuminating her three principle concerns – character, mood, and uniqueness. She holds a BS in biology from College Misericordia in Dallas, PA, and her creative process draws on her science background. “ There are many areas of science for artists to explore in relation to watercolor painting,” Maiser says. “First, by considering the physical and chemical properties of water, paint and paper, one can better understand how watercolor artists achieve the luminous glowing colors and fascinating textures so wonderfully characteristic of their medium. The artist can investigate the pure physics of light, color, and color mixing as well as the psychology of color perception. Science is knowledge of the general truths of a subject; creating good art necessitates knowing all one can about the science of art.”

A former scholarship student at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, Maiser has participated in numerous juried shows and won several awards, including a First Place showing at the 35 th Annual Mystic Art Association exhibition. She is an elected member of the Salmagundi Club, the Connecticut Watercolor Society, the Lyme Art Association, and the Mystic Arts Center. Her work is represented in private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
