Little information is available about the life of Ann Crane. She was the stepdaughter, and later
the wife, of the American Tonalist painter Bruce Crane (1857-1937), who was associated with the
Old Lyme Art Colony. Ann studied art with John Twachtman (1853-1902) in New York and with
Luc-Olivier Merson (1846-1920) in Paris. Her husband maintained a studio in New York while
Ann spent most of her time at the family farm near Utica. The family moved to Bronxville, New
York in 1914 and Ann is recorded as having been active in that city up until her death in 1948.
