A prominent member of the Woodstock Art Colony and native of New York City, Cecil
Chichester is best known for landscape paintings that capture the seasons in transition.
While his style is primarily representational, his utilization of the plein air technique
often gave his paintings an Impressionist quality. He was a teacher for the Art Students
League and later established the Chichester School of Landscape painting. Although few
exhibition records for Chichester exist, contemporary critiques of his artwork indicate
that he exhibited alongside other Woodstock artists in shows at Macbeth Gallery,
Belnord Modern Art Gallery, and Katz Gallery.
