George Anthonisen, one of the nation’s most celebrated sculptors of the human figure, was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1936. Raised in Vermont and New Hampshire, Anthonisen was tutored by Elizabeth Clark Gunther of Hancock, New Hampshire, who first exposed Anthonisen to the fine arts. He graduated from the University of Vermont, and in 1961 relocated to New York where he completed his artistic education at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. In 1971, the U.S. Department of the Interior appointed Anthonisen as sculptor-in-residence of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, New Hampshire. Anthonisen is a fellow and past board member of the National Sculpture Society, and now resides in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. |
