Junius Allen
( 1898 - 1962)

Low Tide, Port Clyde, circa 1950

Junius Allen was considered one of the most promising artists of the twentieth century for his naturalistic and enticing paintings of coastal landscapes and harbors in New Jersey, New York, and New England. Monhegan Island in Maine, the setting of Low Tide, Port Clyde, offered a similar locale for Allen to exercise his artistic ability while depicting his preferred subject matter. He became one of the many American artists inspired by the spectacular landscape over generations. The solidity of the compositional elements and soft brush strokes create a provocative dichotomy reminiscent of experiencing frigid ocean water on a hot summer day. He earned distinguished roles as a member of the Salmagundi Club and academician of the National Academy of Design during his lifetime, as well as numerous exhibitions along the Northeast coast. His work can be found today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Montclair Art Museum, the Art Museum of the New Britain Institute, and the State Teachers College of Trenton, New Jersey in addition to many private and institutional collections.
