Winter Snows

Henry Hammond Ahl was born in East Hartford, Connecticut and built a career as a Tonalist painter. He studied at the Royal Academy of Munich, where he later exhibited, and in Paris with Jean Leon Gerome (1824-1904) at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He established studios in Washington, D.C. and New York City early in his career, and developed a reputation as a portraitist of politicians and members of high society. After settling in Boston in 1920, he focused on landscapes of local Massachusetts scenery. He was a member of the American Artists Professional League, the Copley Society, the Salmagundi Club, and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts.
