Zhang Yi

Contemporary Chinese Master

We celebrate this remarkable opportunity to exhibit the exquisite gongbi
paintings of Zhang-Yi, a young professor of painting from Nanjing, China.
Gongbi
is literally translated as "meticulous brushwork". This ink on rice paper
painting technique has been a tradition in China for over two thousand years
and represents the most demanding, precise and intellectual style of art.

Despite a limited background in the art of China, we were immediately struck
by the sheer beauty of these paintings. While the subject matter of bird and
flower, figure, and landscape is distinctly traditional in Chinese art,
Zhang Yi brings a subtlety of color, strength of design, and poetic refinement
both artistically and intellectually that is truly exceptional.
